The real reason I write to you

Your first job is taking care of yourself.

with JODY LAMB

Hey, Reader.

It's 5 a.m. and I’m sitting next to my sleepy cat writing this email to you.

Thanks for letting me be in your inbox, by the way. I don't take that lightly. I love writing to you and I hope over time I can really get to know you and your journey better.

Speaking of journey. I want to tell you why I do all of this. The emails. The videos. The book. All of it.

It started way back in 2009.

I had just started my healing journey after growing up with an alcoholic mom. I'd read all the clinical books. I understood the science of addiction and its effects on families. I'd learned the terminology.

But you know what actually helped me the most?

Personal stories!

Real, honest stories from regular people like me.

I'd sit in Al-Anon and ACA meetings and hear someone describe an experience that mirrored mine with eerie similarity. And something in me would unclench because I knew I wasn't the only one.

That feeling was more healing than any clinical book I'd read.

So I went looking for more of those stories. Online. In books. Anywhere.

And they barely existed.

The clinical stuff was everywhere. The raw, honest, "here's what it actually felt like" stuff? Almost nowhere.

So I started creating it myself.

That's the whole reason, Reader.

I write about my healing and what I’ve learned along the way because I wish they'd existed when I was desperately Googling at 2 a.m. wondering if anyone else felt the way I did.

I make the videos because the stories I heard in those meeting rooms changed my life, and I wanted those kinds of stories out in the world where anyone searching could find them.

I wrote a memoir (coming soon!) because someone out there right now is where I was at 26. Exhausted. Convinced it's their job to save everyone. And they need to know they're not alone and that their life can change.

And I love doing this work because of you.

I mean that. The people in this community are some of the strongest, most self-aware, most determined people I've ever encountered. You didn't take the easy road. You could have buried it all and kept going. Instead you're here, doing the hard work of healing and building a better life.

That takes guts. And I get to witness it every time you reply to one of these emails or leave a comment on a video.

I’m wondering, Reader. What brought you here? How did you find this community? And what keeps you opening these emails?

Hit reply and tell me. I’d love to know, Reader.

The Blueprint Your first job is taking care of yourself. with JODY LAMB Hey, Reader. Somewhere along the way, somebody sold you a lie. The lie is that before you're allowed to have a good life, you have to go back and heal every single thing that happened to you as a kid. Every wound. Every memory. Every pattern. That you have to finish healing first. And then you get to live. I believed that for years. I spent years with my childhood and young adult years as basically my main hobby. Reading...

The Blueprint Your first job is taking care of yourself. with JODY LAMB Hey, Reader. I generally avoid talking about people-pleasing. Because the kind of people-pleasing that comes out of adult children of alcoholics like me is way more extreme than the kind most people talk about. Let’s just say that if there was an Olympic medal in people-pleasing, we’d take it. Through my healing journey, I’ve worked on shedding my people-pleasing ways. I've read the books. I've listened to the podcasts....

The Blueprint Your first job is taking care of yourself. with JODY LAMB Hey, Reader. You and I email each other because we probably have a lot in common. You probably grew up with some kind of dysfunction in your home. An alcoholic parent or something else. You probably find yourself battling a tall list of challenges as an adult that you know stem from those experiences as a little one. You're probably great at putting yourself last. And you're probably determined to shed those issues or at...
